Overview

A Year in Japan

Artist Louise Forbush's love affair with handmade paper began during a residency in Japan, where the materials she collected inspired the decades of collage work that followed. This volume gathers together impressions of that year spent abroad.

While working from her Mill Valley, California, studio in later years, Forbush accented her collages with calligraphy, gold leaf, scraps of fabrics, bits of reed, worn woods, and other found materials. These objects suggested hidden histories that intrigued the artist. Now, Forbush shares a glimpse of her own history by layering and juxtaposing brief, treasured memories. The result is a unique piece of art.

About the Author

Louise Forbush

Working out of her studio in Mill Valley, California, Louise Forbush spent decades creating small collages of handmade papers accented with found materials. Her art brims with texture and rich color, often appearing as abstracted cityscapes or landscapes. Inspired by ephemera such as old Japanese books and hand drawn maps, Forbush is intrigued by unknown stories; now she offers glimpses of her own hidden history, reflecting on experiences that served as inspiration for her artistic practice.

Judith Solberg

Forbush's niece Judith Solberg is an experienced author and editor. She spent time on each coast before returning to New England in 2002, and works with non-profits and educational institutions across the region. Her professional focus is on building community by drawing connections between past and present, while her freelance writing centers on family narratives.
