Description: This is the fourth edition of a book on the main essentials of critical care nursing. The unique elements are the American Association of Critical Care Nurses' (AACN) essential competencies, key content areas, knowledge competencies, pathological conditions, and key reference information. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide necessary information to all nurses working in the critical care area. The authors note that the book provides this information to ensure safe and knowledgeable care of critically ill patients and families. These are worthy objectives and the book meets them.
Audience: The audience includes any nurses caring for critically ill patients. The authors are very credible and have been writing these types of books for AACN for a number of years. This book is endorsed by the AACN.
Features: The book features thorough and complete information on the AACN critical care essentials, pathological conditions, advanced concepts, and key references. The best aspects of the book are the key content areas, the basics of admission assessments, hemodynamic monitoring, ventilatory care, and ethical concepts. The book is well organized, clear, and through, with current information.
Assessment: The book is well done and thorough. It is easy to read, includes excellent information, and is a great resource; it could be used for critical care certification. The information is timely and covers all the major areas of critical care nursing. A great resource!
