Abandonment: Ruby, Arizona:
Montana Peak mining first began in the 1870s. Montana Camp began where numerous minerals were mined such as lead, copper, zinc, silver, and even gold. With such prosperous land, more miners and settlers came to the area. In 1912, three years after applying for a post office, one was finally established and looking to update the town's name, Julius Andrews, who was the town's postmaster, named it after his wife, Lillie B. Ruby. The following year, Andrews, who had also owned a mercantile in town, sold it to Philip C. Clarke where the ruins remain but crumble more with each passing year. In February 1920, Clarke decided to lease his store to a pair of brothers named Alex and John Frasier. Approximately two months later, two bandits came in and robbed the store. Both Alex and John Frasier were killed during the robbery. Alex was found lying by the cash register and was dead on arrival while John was shot through the eye next to the safe. He was forced to open the safe before being shot where he died just a few hours later. One of the bandits was later found and arrested but the other was never captured.

After the murder, Clarke decided to sell the store. The next person to purchase the store was Frank Pearson and his wife, Myrtle. On August 26, 1921, seven armed men rushed into the store and killed both Frank and his wife during a robbery. Out of the seven bandits, two of them, Placido Silvas and Manuel Martinez, were arrested. Martinez was located in Sonora when he sold the gold teeth he took from Myrtle's dead body. Martinez was sentenced to hang while Silvas was sentenced to life imprisonment. Santa Cruz Sheriff George White and Deputy Leonard Smith were bringing them to the jail in Florence when the car overturned and White was killed immediately in the accident. Deputy Smith died soon after. The bandits fled but Martinez was eventually found and hanged while Silvas was never recaptured.
