Description: This is the third edition of a book on COPD in the ABC series for general practitioners and primary care physicians in the U.K. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The purpose, according to the authors, is to provide an update on the diagnosis, pathophysiology, and modern management of COPD, with special attention to the important advances in the field in the last 10 years. These are worthy objectives, which the authors meet.
Audience: Recognizing that most COPD patients are diagnosed and treated in general practice offices, the book is aimed at general practitioners, junior doctors, specialist nurses, physician assistants, and students of medicine and its allied disciplines. By making the book accessible, the authors succeed in making this an easy-to-use resource for any healthcare professionals dealing with COPD patients. The authors, all from the U.K., are experienced practitioners in the field of COPD management.
Features: The book covers the epidemiology and risk factors for COPD, pathology and pathogenesis, and diagnostic pathways including spirometry. It then discusses the treatment modalities including smoking cessation, inhaled and oral therapies, drug delivery devices, nonpharmacological management including pulmonary rehabilitation, surgical, and interventional strategies, oxygen therapy, ventilatory support, treatment of exacerbations, and palliative and end-of-life care, as well as future treatments on the horizon. Ample color pictures, tables, and graphs help get the message across. The best part of the book is that it is easy to digest, yet it manages to discuss most of the important aspects of the management of COPD patients. Its discussion of different inhaled drug delivery devices and how to use them is something that is not found in most COPD books and is extremely useful for patient counseling. Its discussion of nonpharmacological ways of managing patient symptoms is also unique and highly commendable.
Assessment: This well-written and easy-to-read book on the different aspects of COPD, including its diagnosis and management, should be an extremely useful resource for anyone from medical students to primary care physicians and young specialists caring for COPD patients. Its practical approach to COPD management is highly commendable.
