Overview

Abdominal Ultrasound for Surgeons provides a comprehensive guide to the use of ultrasonography in surgical practice of abdominal diseases. The content is divided into three major sections, with the final section being dedicated to the logistics of incorporating ultrasound into a surgical practice. In Part I : The Basics, the principles of ultrasonography are reviewed focusing on ultrasound physics, equipment and instrumentation. The well-organized format makes it easy to navigate. High quality imaging, color photographs, anatomic and procedural diagrams, tables, and graphs appear on nearly every page.
Purpose: The editors state that the book is "intended to serve as the beginning or continuation of an education in ultrasound for the surgeon." They note that ultrasonography is a "practical and indispensable tool of the surgeon preoperatively, intraoperatively, and postoperatively." The emphasis throughout is to equip surgeons so that they feel confident with the basics of ultrasound and scanning to improve patient care. This book meets these commendable objectives.
Audience: The audience is surgeons in practice or in training. Some chapters are more appropriate for acute care/trauma surgeons, while others focus on surgical oncology and hepatobiliary surgery. In addition, there is a chapter on abdominal/retroperitoneal vascular ultrasound and another on endoluminal ultrasound.
Features: The book is divided into three parts covering the basics; anatomy, application and intervention; and ultrasound in surgical practice. Each part has 4 to 14 chapters that can stand alone. The authors do an excellent job of describing the principles of ultrasound, the equipment, and the associated physics while maintaining a clinical focus. Most chapters cover the technique of scanning with diagrams or photos of the surgeon and probe positioning, along with the ultrasound image and intraoperative photos if applicable. The images are clear and easy to interpret. The attention to detail is unparalleled. Each chapter has an excellent balance of text and graphics. The book also covers billing and credentialing.
Assessment: This is an essential and a manageable reference for surgeons who treat patients with abdominal disease. It is a great value for the price, providing surgeons with practical approaches for ultrasonography accompanied by abundant ultrasound images and color photos and diagrams. This well formatted book fills a unique niche, in that it empowers surgeons to use this practical tool in a more effective manner to improve patient care.
