Description: If you are searching for a book that provides an overview of the various modalities available for laser and nonablative skin rejuvenation, you may find this reference useful. Each chapter focuses on a different surgical resurfacing treatment: CO2 laser resurfacing, erbium:YAG laser resurfacing, electrosurgical skin resurfacing, and nonablative skin remodeling.
Purpose: The author's goal is to review various lasers and other light sources for facial rejuvenation.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists with a cosmetic practice. The book does not discuss in detail how to do the procedures nor is there an in-depth discussion about how to treat complications. Rather, it is a broad overview of the basic principles behind using such devices.
Features: There are many color photographs showing the progression of the patients' skin response over time, from immediately after treatment to one year postoperative. Sometimes it was hard to see an improvement; in some cases, I thought the patient looked better before treatment. The book does a good job of discussing and summarizing studies about the different lasers and providing a comparison when the data is present. I missed seeing more practical information such as the dressings used, how to apply them, the techniques used with different devices, etc. The final chapter is on marketing your practice for these procedures.
Assessment: This is another book from which to choose when reading about facial resurfacing and rhytide ablation procedures. There are comparable books on the subject and if you are planning to do or learn the procedure, this book would be a general introduction.
