About the Author

Dale Dangleben, MD, FAC, is Trauma Medical Director, Surgical/Trauma ICU Director, and Acute Care Surgery Director of Geisinger Holy Spirit Hospital. He also serves as a Clinical Associate Professor of Surgery at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine.


Firas Madbak, MD, FACS, is Associate Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Acute Care Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine - Jacksonville.

Description: This is the second edition of a book designed to help surgical residents prepare for their annual in-training examination, commonly referred to as the ABSITE. It is a combination of multiple choice questions and pearls, organized in the usual fashion. The first edition was published in 2013. Changes in the specialty as well as the general evolution of the examination render a new edition appropriate at this time.
Purpose: The back of the cover promises that the text "reduces pre-test anxiety and provides the knowledge and confidence you need to pass the exam." These are worthy objectives for residents. The book joins a rather crowded field - numerous editions of various books of questions and answers (including some designed to accompany standard textbooks of surgery) exist. Despite the crowded nature of this particular field, a good text is always welcome. The book certainly provides the knowledge; whether or not that decreases pre-test anxiety and increases confidence must be taken on faith. The book amply meets its objectives in terms of providing a concise source of facts and sample questions.
Audience: This is a book for surgery residents. It is specifically aimed at the ABSITE, an examination that these residents must take every year. It may also be of use to medical students interested in a career in surgery. The book does meet the needs of its intended audience. Most of the chapters are written by senior residents, fellows, or junior faculty. Their familiarity with the exam is presumably a plus. The two named authors are faculty members of considerable experience and appear to have exercised appropriately tight editorial control.
Features: The book begins with a nice two-page list of "General Test-Taking Tips" and then dives right into a series of chapters that cover the gamut of subjects typically taught during residency (and tested by the ABSITE). Chapters include a long series of questions and answers, which allow readers to attempt to answer the question and then immediately learn whether the answer is correct. (Example: "What is a superficial burn? Injury localized to the epidermis.") These are supplemented by very clear line drawings, algorithms, and color photos. Chapters include multiple choice questions with explanations of answers set out in the usual fashion. The book concludes with a chapter on ethics and professionalism. As is typical for the ABSITE (as opposed to the surgery written examination), basic science aspects as well as clinical knowledge are tested.
Assessment: This is a nice book, carefully edited and well illustrated. It will be useful to residents preparing for the ABSITE. It may also be an effective companion text that a resident (or medical student) might use to test their comprehension as they work through a standard surgical textbook. This is the second edition, and rapid progress in this area amply justifies this replacement.
