About the Author

Dr. Massoud Mahmoudi is a practicing internist and allergist in Los Gatos California. He completed his Ph. D. program in Microbiology at University of North Texas and Wadley Institutes of Molecular Medicine in Texas. Subsequently he completed three different post doctoral fellowships at UT Southwestern Medical School at Dallas Texas doing research on oncogenes, biology of aging, and tissue plasminogen activator. He then attended A.T. Still University College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville Missouri where he completed his DO degree. Subsequently he attended an internal medicine residency program at Yale University and Rowan University. Then he completed a fellowship in Allergy and Clinical Immunology at University of California Davis. He is currently President of the American Osteopathic College of Allergy and Immunology and a faculty member at University of California San Francisco, Rowan University, and Touro University.

He is the author/editor of 10 books on Allergy, Immunology, and other medical topics. He was a columnist for local newspapers and the San Francisco Chronicle. He has spoken locally and nationally on Allergy and Immunology and has appeared on local television stations and Fox News. Dr. Mahmoudi is currently the Editor-in Chief of the peer reviewed journal “SN Comprehensive Clinical Medicine”, a Nature-Springer publication.

Description: This book offers a comprehensive review of allergy and immunology, with special attention to board review preparation. The first three chapters cover the basic immunology knowledge one should have at the minimum in preparation of taking the allergy/immunology board exam. The rest of the chapters and the bulk of the book cover the main clinical aspects and common diseases in the field of allergy and immunology. Each chapter presents two cases, with each case followed by five questions/answers to illustrate the main teaching points regarding the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.
Purpose: The main purpose of the book is to serve as a review for allergy and immunology fellows in training as well as practicing allergists who plan to take the board examination. There are very few resources out there that serve this purpose. Therefore, this book will be a great addition to what is currently available for those preparing for the board examination. The book does cover most of the main categories and the minimum information one should know before taking the board exam.
Audience: The book is written for both allergy and immunology fellows in training as well as for practicing allergists. The level of detail and complexity is appropriate for the intended audience and purpose. The authors are faculty members at various academic centers in the U.S. and are credible authorities on the subjects based on their credentials.
Features: The book covers the three main basic science topics (innate and adaptive immunity, immune cells and functions, and HLA and transplantation), as well as the main clinical diagnosis commonly seen in allergy and immunology such as allergic rhinitis, asthma, food allergy, eosinophilic disorders, atopic dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis, insect allergy, anaphylaxis, drug allergy, immunodeficiencies, etc. The tables, charts, and diagrams help illustrate pathogenesis and organize massive amounts of information in a more digestible manner. The photographs and radiographs also demonstrate important clinical findings in the disease process. The book is a good review of the main topics covered in the allergy and immunology board examination. The basic science topics are presented as a brief overview. One will need to reference an immunology textbook if interested in learning about immunology in more depth.
Assessment: The book gives a great general overview of the main topics covered in the allergy and immunology board examination. The format makes the information easy to digest and is a relatively quick read for a board review book. It can also be used by all practicing allergists as a quick review tool for the diseases we encounter regularly in the field.
