Description: This is the second edition of this board-style question-and-answer study guide. The book is soft bound containing a total of 622 pages, including the index. It is divided into 11 chapters, with each chapter focusing on a specific topic in nephrology that is board pertinent. Each chapter begins immediately with questions, followed by answers and explanations. The book is easy to navigate with a table of contents and index to easily search topics.
Purpose: This is a study resource aimed at aiding fellows and nephrologists who are preparing to initially certify or recertify for their nephrology boards. It can also be used to test nephrology knowledge for continued medical education.
Audience: This book is written for fellows and practicing nephrologists who are preparing to take their nephrology boards or those who wish to keep up with and test their nephrology knowledge.
Features: This textbook is composed of board-style type questions in nephrology. It is organized into 11 chapters, with topics including fluids and electrolytes, acid-base, glomerular and tubulo-interstitial disease, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, renal pharmacology, genetic diseases and pregnancy, ICU nephrology, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and transplantation. Following each question is the correct answer in bold with explanations, including explanation of the incorrect answers. There are flow charts of algorithms and important formulas with calculations imbedded in the answer explanation. There are also colored pictures of kidney biopsy in light microscopy found in the glomerular diseases chapter. Electron microscopy is available to make questions as complete and comprehensive as possible. Finally, there is a list of resources and further reading regarding the tested topic in the question.
Assessment: This is an excellent resource for all nephrologists and fellows who are preparing to take their nephrology certification board exam. It is difficult to find a comprehensive board review book containing ample board-style type questions for practice and review of nephrology pathophysiology and pathology. The colored pictures of kidney biopsies in light microscopy and urine analyses are helpful learning materials that mimic the actual board exam and the list of resources in the suggested reading section is helpful for learning about the question topics more in-depth.
