The world of military and law enforcement K-9s provides an interesting setting for this story of romantic suspense delivered by narrators Daniel May and Kristin Kalbli. Brandon specializes in rehabilitating working dogs after a trauma or injury. While working with a bomb-sniffing dog, he finds an explosive planted in his friend Sophie's car. The close call makes Brandon rethink his platonic feelings for Sophie while he tries to solve the mystery of who wants her dead. May narrates the passages told from Brandon's perspective, while Kalbli narrates from Sophie's. May's Brandon is formidable and dominant; Kalbli's Sophie is more soft-spoken. Kalbli does a great job conveying Sophie's emotional rollercoaster, but in May’s voice she comes off as a bit shrill. The insights into the world of working dogs and specialized dog training are fascinating, and provide a unique backdrop to this well-crafted story. L.C.L. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
