ABOUT THE ACCUPLACER MATH TEST

What is the ACCUPLACER test?
The ACCUPLACER is a battery of computer-adaptive college-placement assessments developed by the College Board. These tests are designed to evaluate your skills in reading, writing, and mathematics as you prepare to enroll in college-level courses. The tests help identify your strengths and needs in each subject area. This book will help you prepare for three of these tests:

• Arithmetic

• College-Level Math

• Elementary Algebra

Over 7.5 million ACCUPLACER tests are administered each year to some 2.5 million students in more than 1,500 high schools, community colleges, four-year colleges, and technical schools around the world.

Your ACCUPLACER test results, along with other information, will be used by academic advisors and counselors to place you in the appropriate courses at your college or technical school.

What is the format of the ACCUPLACER math tests?
The ACCUPLACER math tests are strictly multiple-choice and computer-adaptive. This means that the test questions you get are based on your responses to the questions you’ve already answered. The test’s difficulty level rises or falls depending on your answers as you work your way through the test. The number of questions also varies depending on which ACCUPLACER tests you take. Some tests have 12 questions, while others have up to 40.

ACCUPLACER tests are untimed, so you can move at a comfortable pace. It’s important to give yourself enough time to do your best and complete the test because your results are the key factor in determining the college-level courses you can take.

How is the ACCUPLACER scored? What happens if I fail the test?
You cannot fail the ACCUPLACER test, because a placement test can’t be passed or failed. Still, you’ll want to bear in mind that the ACCUPLACER test score range is between 20 and 120 points. Each school’s faculty determines their own cut scores based upon the skill levels they deem necessary for success in a college course. Any questions on scoring should be directed to your academic advisor. Again, these tests are used only for placement purposes, so they’re intended to give you and your college an accurate measure of your academic skills.

The test is scored online and individual student score reports are available immediately after testing. Reports deliver student test scores, customized messages from the institution where you’re enrolled, and information about course placement based on institutional placement scores. It’s a good idea to ask your academic advisor about testing policies and procedures. That way, you’re prepared and can plan accordingly.

How do I make an appointment to take the ACCUPLACER test?
Your college’s advising and counseling office will have all the information you need to make an appointment for the test. Your academic advisors will be able to answer specific questions you have about testing dates, fees, and other requirements. If your college is located in another state, contact your institution’s test center to learn more about remote testing options. With the permission of both institutions, you may be able to take the ACCUPLACER test at a local college. On test day, bring your photo ID and any special materials that your college has requested. Contact your institution’s test center for more details.

What can I bring on test day?
It’s your responsibility to consult ACCUPLACER registration materials so you know what you can and cannot bring into the test center. This information may be updated by the College Board from time to time. Rest assured, however, that the testing center will provide you with pens, pencils, and scrap paper.

What will I be tested on?
There are three math tests on the ACCUPLACER test: Arithmetic, College-Level Math, and Elementary Algebra. The following is a breakdown of the math topics tested on the ACCUPLACER test.

Arithmetic
The Arithmetic test, comprised of 17 questions, measures your ability to perform basic arithmetic operations and to solve problems that involve fundamental arithmetic concepts.

College-Level Math
The College-Level Math test, comprised of 20 questions, measures your ability to solve problems that involve college-level mathematics concepts.

Elementary Algebra
The Elementary Algebra test, comprised of 12 questions, measures your ability to perform basic algebraic operations and to solve problems involving elementary algebraic concepts.
