Ace of Hearts

Gary W. Bryant's interest in writing began early in life. Snow days from school were spent developing stories as early as the third grade. During his elementary school years, he worked with a cousin and his 8MM camera to write and create movies. Their moviemaking continued through their teen years. That cousin, Lee Anthony Smith, now writes screenplays for movies in Hollywood. A guidance counselor placed Gary in a creative writing class his senior year, which led to him receiving the school creative writing award. It was on to the University of Kentucky where he studied under notable Kentucky writers Gurney Norman and Ed McClanahan, among others. Norman especially was an influential instructor and mentor. The years after college were spent writing for newspapers, magazines, and even for a lobbyist group. Ace of Hearts brought Gary back to his first love, storytelling. A second novel is in the works. Ace Johnson, a former police detective, has nothing left from the life had lived. He retired from a job he loved, separating him from his friends. Cancer took his wife of nearly forty years. His only daughter lived more than five hundred miles away with his two grandchildren. His life was reduced to watching TV and feeding ducks at the park. A chance meeting with a troubled teen girl, Lily Ricotta, changes everything. She has a secret, one that torments her. Ace is determined to find it, reawakening his dormant detective skills and his paternal instinct, as well as igniting a new sense of purpose. Lily also restarts his heart, leading Ace to a romance with Kathy Williams, a widow much in the same situation as Ace had been before Lily. Ace's love for Kathy grows out of the tenderness and warmth she shows Lily. Once Lily trusts enough to reveal her secret, Ace discovers she is only the tip of the iceberg. Ace, Lily, and Kathy work together to expose the criminals imposing their will on girls throughout the region. This is a book of friendship, love, romance, and purpose.
