The thing about leaders is that everyone seems to know one when they see one, yet few could define the qualities that set a leader apart from the pack. Author Kouzes brings his insight to this difficult subject based on his years of research and successful collaborations with Barry Posner (e.g., What Followers Expect from Leaders, Jossey-Bass, 1988). Kouzes explains the six disciplines of leadership: discovering oneself; appreciating others and their diversity; affirming shared values; developing capacity; serving a purpose; and sustaining hope. He also presents his definition of leadership, which is fundamentally rooted in trustworthiness. As reader, the author delivers a superb narration, without the usual hype and hoopla so common to this genre. His "fireside chat" style will appeal to harried executives. Highly recommended for all libraries.-Dale Farris, Groves, Tex.
