Overview

Dermatologists commonly treat acne, which affects 40 to 50 million Americans each year and about 85 percent of all patients at some point in their lives. Dermatologists, primary care doctors, and pediatricians see these patients every day in practice. It is important to treat the skin effectively not only to reduce the risk of physical scarring, but also to address the negative psychosocial impact this disease carries. Improving the skin can improve self-confidence, interpersonal relationships, and performance in school or at work.

Acneiform Eruptions in Dermatology is a practical, full-color guide to the differential diagnosis of acne vulgaris and the treatment of acne-like conditions. It is organized into sections by subtype of condition (e.g., infections, genetic syndromes, medication-caused) and includes a section of variants of acne that may be misdiagnosed. Purpose: According to the editor, the aim is to provide a differential diagnosis of acne and acneiform eruptions, thereby enabling clinicians to make the correct diagnosis and provide more appropriate treatment. These are worthy objections which are, for the most part, admirably met.
Audience: The editor aims this book at any healthcare providers who see the estimated 40-50 million people in the U.S. with acne. This includes dermatologists, primary care doctors, and pediatricians. Medical students and physicians in training could be added to this list as well. The contributing authors are all credible authorities.
Features: The book opens with an overview of acne vulgaris and its treatment and then heads into a detailed section on acne variants. The remaining sections delineate infectious diseases, genetic syndromes, and pediatric dermatoses that mimic acne. There is a useful chapter on acneiform drug eruptions. Finally, a section covers miscellaneous disorders that can be confused with acne vulgaris that do not fit into the previous categories. The best attribute of the book is the way it presents the material in a complete yet concise manner. Each chapter is organized in a similar, logical order, which makes it easy to quickly review salient points of a disorder.
Assessment: I started to review this book with the aim of quickly scanning a few chapters and ended up reading it cover to cover. The vast array of acne vulgaris and its mimickers is handled in a comprehensive, yet very readable fashion. I was able to answer some questions I have had even after years in practice, which were not adequately addressed in other similar reviews. Moreover, this book is clearly organized and concise, making it not only enjoyable reading, but valuable as a quick reference during a busy day in the clinic as well. I wholeheartedly recommend this book. It is a worthwhile addition to any healthcare provider's library.
