Description: The British Medical Association (BMA) commissioned this report on acupuncture education and practice, safety, and efficacy. This policy report will serve to influence doctors, government, policy makers, health professionals, the media, and the public.
Purpose: The purpose is to report on the scientific basic of acupuncture as well as training and standards of practitioner competency in the U.K. The report also presents research findings on British general practitioners' knowledge and use of acupuncture. Viewing the rise in acupuncture use in the U.K. as a key public health issue, the BMA report will serve to provide information to the public and guide the profession in determining policy.
Audience: The report is written expressly for U.K. doctors and policy makers. The authors are members of the board of science and education of the BMA.
Features: This report, masquerading as a book, is a recapitulation of information on acupuncture from other sources. The $24 cost is high considering the information provided. At best, new findings in general practitioners' knowledge of, referral for, or use of acupuncture distinguish the work.
Assessment: The report will no doubt be useful for British doctors, although other books, such as Ernst and White's Acupuncture: A Scientific Appraisal (Butterworth-Heinemann, 1999) provide richer information and better value than this report.
