Description: This is an excellent and comprehensive new book covering the clinical features, biology, course, and long-term outcome of patients who have suffered acute and transient psychotic episodes. Written and edited by researchers in the field, the book is a welcome contribution to psychiatric nosology.
Purpose: The purpose is to contribute to the understanding of acute and transient psychosis. The authors note that there is "very little and unsystematic research on this topic," adding, "No serious biological, genetic, pharmacological, prognostic and clinical research is possible if we do not have exact definitions or if we do not have exactly homogeneous groups of patients." The authors attempt to address these issues in the book.
Audience: The book is primarily for psychiatric researchers. Anyone who treats patients with psychotic disorders and wishes to further their knowledge of these disorders that have generally a good prognosis, would benefit from reading this book.
Features: The book features 243 pages divided into three parts containing 13 chapters. Part 1 covers the history and concepts of these disorders. Part 2 is an extensive review of the studies focusing on clinical features, epidemiology, treatment, suicidality, and comorbidity. Part 3 addresses the issue of nosology: where should these disorders be placed in our diagnostic schema? The references are relevant and up-to-date and the index is helpful.
Assessment: This is an interesting and informative book on a topic that heretofore has not been sufficiently addressed. This book is a step in that direction.
