This is an attractive, easy to carry in the white coat pocket, paperback book on pain management written by two directors of pain services, one in Australia and one in the U.S. The aim of the book is to provide nurses, medical students, and doctors in training (interns, house officers, residents, and registrars) with simple and practical information and guidelines for safe and more effective management of conventional methods of analgesia and newer acute pain management techniques. The book will be useful to medical practitioners interested in acute pain management themselves or who want to introduce these services at their institutions. Boxes in each chapter regarding patient-controlled analgesia, epidural narcotics, and appendixes are very useful features of this book. The book covers a lot of pertinent points. The first chapter is quite catchy, mentioning myths that medical students are made to believe, e.g., ^^Pain is not good but at least does no harm.^^ It is a very easy-to-read and carry-along pain management guide. This is a good book for reading during and before acute pain service rotation of housestaff. It is also a good reference source for surgical and general medical staff for knowledge of newer techniques of pain management, indications, and contraindications.

Purpose: The purpose is to provide simple, practical, and easily accessible evidence-based information, example guidelines, and protocols for the practice of pain management for a variety of medical professionals who treat adults with acute pain in the medical and surgical setting.
Audience: The intended audience for the book includes nursing students, medical students, and doctors in training. However, the audience for the practical guide is broad; all medical professionals without special training in pain medicine will find this book useful. The authors have experience in establishing acute pain service (APS).
Features: The book is a practical guide on pain management in the adult non-obstetric patient. Each chapter has multiple subchapters with clear headlines to simplify topic search. There are chapters on broad topics such as pharmacology of analgesic agents, routes of administration, and different types of pain. In addition, there are specialized chapters on advanced topics including complex patients, which are easily applicable to clinical scenarios and settings in which readers might find themselves. The text is supported by a plethora of references that enable readers to further explore certain areas of interest. Each chapter ends with key points that highlight and sum up the important points of the chapter.
Assessment: The book provides information on frequent problems encountered when treating pain in the adult non-obstetric patient. The book is not a classic textbook on pain with a focus on anatomy and neurochemistry, but rather a pure application of the study of pain in the clinical setting and a helpful aid in the most frequently encountered clinical scenarios. The book includes examples of guidelines, protocols, and "standard order forms" from the Central Adelaide Local Health Network, Adelaide, Australia, which could be useful for other APS looking to standardize their practice for improved outcomes. It provides the latest evidence in pain management with references to recent studies (2020). There are a multitude of books on pain management available, but this book is accessible, light in the pocket, easy to navigate, and well written, making it a great resource for all health professionals in training.
