Purpose: The goal is to promote sound nutrition principles in gestational diabetes mellitus, to achieve optimal outcomes for the woman and her infant. The book addresses an important topic. Gestational diabetes mellitus is now recognized as one of the major medical complications of pregnancy that has consequences for the immediate and long-term health of the mother and infant. Given the epidemic of obesity in the United States, the number of women at risk for gestational diabetes mellitus is increasing. Nutrition intervention is the cornerstone of treatment and management of this condition. The book accomplishes its purpose.
Audience: The book is written for a diverse audience of health professionals who care for women with gestational diabetes mellitus including dietetics professionals, diabetes educators, physicians, nurses and other allied health professionals. The authors are credible authorities in the field.

Strengths of the book include the breadth of discussion about gestational diabetes mellitus, up-to-date references, easy to locate information, nice summary tables and a clear writing style. Unique features include a 51-page appendix with representative case studies and practical tools for nutritional care of women with gestational diabetes, and discussion of the incidence, unique cultural features and postpartum care. A potential shortcoming might be the less than ideal figures to illustrate the pathophysiology of gestational diabetes mellitus. (Fig 2.1 is quite old.)
