Description: This book provides an introduction to the field of general neurology. This 12th edition is an update to the previous version, which was published in 2019.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to introduce the neurological approach and how it differs from other aspects of medicine. This is important for trainees and medical students in formulating a cogent differential diagnosis. The book also offers a summary of various neurological diseases.
Audience: The book is partly written in spoken format and is accessible to general neurologists, residents, and medical students. The authors are credible leaders in the field of neurology and within their respective subspecialties.
Features: After introducing the field of neurology, the book delves into the diagnostic modalities that neurologists commonly use. It then breaks down diseases based on presenting symptoms. The book concludes by focusing on major categories of neurologic disease. Compared to previous versions, this edition provides an extensive overview of stroke and cerebrovascular disease and should be a necessary read for those entering stroke rotation.
Assessment: This book is one of many neurology texts in the field. It is comparable to the two-volume set of Bradley and Daroff's Neurology in Clinical Practice, 8th Edition, Jankovic et al. (Elsevier, 2022). Adams and Victor's Principles of Neurology, 12th Edition, Ropper et al. (McGraw Hill, 2023) is also challenging, but slightly more manageable if the aim is to complete a full survey of neurology. Busy residents will have to weigh the benefits and drawbacks of using this book as a reference material versus online resources such as PubMed and UptoDate.
