Description: This is a rare book on issues in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with chronic renal diseases.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introductory, birds-eye view of chronic kidney diseases in AYA, from the psychological, nutritional, and reproductive health-related issues to a concise and up-to-date account of various etiological disease processes like congenital anomalies of kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) and glomerular diseases, etc. The book provides basic knowledge about various therapeutic modalities (peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis) of end-stage renal disease and renal transplantation. It certainly meets the author's objectives to disseminate current understanding about chronic renal diseases.
Audience: This is an excellent, concise, and easy-to-understand introductory book for all postgraduate trainees and for any pediatricians who have an interest in expanding their knowledge of chronic renal disease with a special focus on adolescent issues.
Features: Each of the 16 chapters covers the basic and current literature about a topic followed by a robust reference section. Tables are clear, succinct, and informative. Figures are few and far between but are of high quality and convey the message well. One of the major limitations is the book's brevity, which results in insufficient detail and does not convey the true complexity of this subject, while a few chapters abruptly end and oversimplify management.
Assessment: This is a nice introductory book on AYA chronic kidney disease issues, which provides basic knowledge of the subject with myriad of current references.
