Gr 6 Up-In Forsyth's irrational tale, a self-satisfied 16-year-old is so smug that she makes a bad situation worse. D'Arcey discovers that a classmate is taking refuge in a school storage room because she is afraid of her mother's drug-dealing boyfriend, who is holding the woman hostage. Instead of seeking help, D'Arcey states that she will free Zania's mother. Throughout the story, she wavers in her strategies, unnecessarily dons a variety of disguises, lies to her parents, places her loving grandmother in jeopardy, and somehow convinces Zania to be patient with her plodding methods. The story meanders with no resolution in sight and not much logic. The result is a preposterous, pointless novel. In Out of Time, two of Eilean's friends have attempted suicide: Jamie drugged and drowned himself and Sarah hanged herself but was saved. A third friend is missing and Eilean feels it's her responsibility to find Cathy and convince her to live. The many ways teens can end their lives-guns, drugs, drowning, hanging, exhaust fumes, and even jumping off a mountain-are mentioned. Adults are absent, abusive, out of touch, weak, or just all-around incompetent. Too many topics are crammed into the story and the attempts at humor are out of place and jarring.
