Description: This book on the nursing care of the patient undergoing the most common cardiac surgical procedures also includes the indications for surgery. Preoperative and intraoperative care are discussed, but the majority of the book is focused on postoperative care of the patient. Also, a great deal of emphasis is placed on hemodynamic monitoring.
Purpose: The purpose is to introduce novice nurses to this patient population. The book strives to answer questions that nurses new to this specialty have about cardiovascular nursing care. This type of book is helpful, especially for the novice nurse.
Audience: I concur with the author that the book is written for the novice nurse or for the nurse new to immediate postoperative care of the cardiac surgery patient. It is not intended for the nurse who has experience caring for cardiac surgery patients in the ICU. The book is also appropriate for students.
Features: The book briefly covers indications for surgery, preoperative care, intraoperative care, and discharge from the hospital. The majority of the chapters focus on postoperative care: psychosocial, nutritional, infection, renal, pulmonary, neurological, and hemodynamic monitoring. Recent surgical procedures such as the MIDCAB are not discussed. Also, care of the patient undergoing heart transplantation is not included. One area that needs expansion is cardiac rehabilitation.
Assessment: If I were a new graduate beginning my nursing career with this patient population, I would find this book quite helpful. It is written in an understandable, straightforward manner. I recommend it as a supplement to a traditional nursing textbook.
