Description: Advance care planning has been studied from a number of professional angles, from healthcare decision making to legal-ethical choices. This book gathers all the pieces together in one place so that all the angles can be reviewed at once.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive reference for healthcare professionals — medical, social work, counseling, or even pastoral care. These objectives have been marvelously interwoven throughout the chapters, and the book is indeed a needed resource for all in this area.
Audience: Although expressly written for professionals, students in healthcare and especially palliative care would benefit from studying from these experts. It is not likely to be meaningful to the general public, but will assist professionals in helping individuals make end-of-life decisions. An impressive array of contributors with appropriate background provides expert opinions and research responses.
Features: It is difficult to describe all the content of this book because it begins with "Why?" and continues through advance care planning in various countries and ends with practical skills to forward the idea of advance care planning through political and regulatory agencies. All chapters are equally interesting and provide valuable insight into the issues surrounding advance care planning from a community, family, and individual standpoint. The boxes and tables enable readers to view the important points in a succinct manner. The appendixes provide additional information on advance care planning, questions to ask, information to share, etc. I most certainly cannot identify any shortcomings of this book. It provides valuable insights into advance care planning.
Assessment: As a retired nurse educator and a hospice nurse currently working in the field as a clinical nurse specialist and education coordinator, I read a lot of end of life material, books included. I was intrigued by the massive amount of information in this book and the variety of the content as it applies to individuals, families, communities, healthcare, and politics in a number of countries. This book could be used by professionals to build their expertise in the field. Reading this book should enable them to provide expert advice and assistance to their patients/clients regarding end-of-life choices.
