About the Author

Dr. Ruth Tappen is the Christine E. Lynn Eminent Scholar in Nursing at Florida Atlantic University. She has a doctorate in nursing education from Teachers College, Columbia University in New York and completed a postdoc in measurement at the College of Nursing, University of Arizona in Tucson.Dr. Tappen is an active researcher who has had continuous funding for research and educational projects for over 30 years. She has authored several books and published over 50 articles. She has served as a reviewer on a number of NIH panels including CBPR, SBIR and Research Ethics. She also served as acting Vice President for Research at Florida Atlantic University and was the founder of a thriving nurse-practitioner-based memory disorder center on Boca Raton campus which provided an opportunity to put research findings into practice. Her specialty area is gerontological nursing with an emphasis on transitional care, cognitive disorders, measurement and cross-cultural issues.

Purpose: The text's purpose has not changed from the previous editions — helping the reader learn how to conduct nursing research.
Audience: Various audiences would find this book particularly useful. Most notably, graduate level nursing students who must complete a master's thesis or capstone project, doctoral dissertation, or doctoral project which requires familiarity with nursing research. Health systems with a nursing research committee may find the text a useful resource, as may existing nursing researchers who may be looking for an up-to-date reference text. The book will also be useful for others in allied health disciplines as it provides tools to help planning and conducting research in general.
Features: Chapters move logically from foundational to more complex concepts. A brief introduction describing the intent or purpose begins each chapter. The chapters provide a variety of tables, charts, images, and photographs, as well as images of computer software applications that help to illustrate various concepts and simplify complex information. Each chapter ends with a conclusion and includes references for further review. This revision addresses many issues impacting contemporary nursing research. The book covers concepts including big data, the Revised Common Rule, predatory publishing, and research priorities from the National Institutes for Health. A new chapter on mixed-method research addresses the increased interest in including the voice of the research participant in contemporary research studies.
