Description: This is a comprehensive look at advanced types of imaging and interventional procedures performed in the radiology department. Some of the more traditional procedures are reviewed (such as arthrography, venography, and myelography). Newer procedures and imaging modalities are also discussed.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a study of various special procedures performed in the radiology department. Medical indications for these procedures are defined, applicable anatomy is reviewed, specialized equipment unique to each procedure is discussed, and expected outcomes and patient care considerations are assessed. Given the ever-changing nature of this specialty, this book can be an important reference for the specialized radiographer.
Audience: The target audience can include any member of the radiology department, but in particular the radiographer who participates in the advanced procedures. Students undergoing basic radiography training as well as those aspiring to specialize will find this to be a useful resource.
Features: Charts, pictures, anatomic diagrams, and radiographs are used extensive1y and effectively throughout this book. The reader's understanding of the subject material will, for the most part, be enhanced by these illustrations. There are a few radiographs that didn't reproduce well and some pictures appear to be old, but overall this does not reduce the effectiveness of their use. The table of contents is well organized and easy to use. References are well-known and will provide the reader with an opportunity to expand on a given chapter's subject matter.
Assessment: Overall, this book can be a very useful tool of reference for those involved in the radiology field. It is one of the most comprehensive and well organized publications that I have read concerning these advanced procedures and specialized imaging studies. In particular, Part Four: Interventional Procedures is an excellent, up-to-date look at some of the newest innovations taking place in the radiology department. Even those members of the department who do not directly participate in these procedures will find this informative and enlightening.

A textbook for radiographers who are certified or nearing certification and are familiar with conventional radiography; for imaging departments, including those in small rural areas that do not have the luxury of CT, MR, or other specialized scanners; and for all health care professionals as an introduction to specialized imaging modalities.
