Description: This is an accessible book full of practical information for everyday endoscopic urological practice. The comprehensive list of topics is discussed in enough detail to provide background for a deeper understanding yet do so with a light touch. The book covers helpful subjects such as patient positioning and access to the ureter as well as the complexities of stone composition and metabolic analysis.
Purpose: This book represents an appropriate homage to the late great Demetrius H. Bagley. The editors have dedicated the book to Dr. Bagley and much of the content can be traced back to his pioneering contributions. The editors have addressed a great range of issues in one book, allowing readers access to common and rare clinical problems. The goal of summarizing and simplifying the complexities of advanced ureteroscopy has been reached and exceeded.
Audience: The book is useful for any urologist interested in advancing their knowledge of ureteroscopy, from residents to those who have been in practice for many years. The editors are pioneers and respected experts who have made extensive contributions to the field. They represent decades of hard-learned lessons and a rich experience of common and rare conditions and situations.
Features: The book covers practical areas such as preparation, instrumentation, and techniques as well as the various conditions that are typically treated with ureteroscopy. It includes a few rare entities one will encounter with regular practice. In particular, the chapters addressing difficult access to the ureter and instruments engage the readers from the start. The chapters on stones and upper tract urothelial carcinoma are comprehensive and reflect the great contributions the editors have made to these fields. The diagrams and illustrations, in particular for the chapters on difficult access to the ureter, instruments, and basic techniques, are clear and very instructive.
Assessment: I have read longer books by some of the editors on this subject as well as the weighty two-volume Smith's Textbook of Endourology, 4th Edition, Smith (Wiley, 2018). While the book under review is limited to ureteroscopy, it packs a lot into a small book (281 pages). It will be much more practical for everyday use, especially for residents and fellows.
