This book, the 43rd volume of the series Advances in Applied Microbiology, contains six chapters covering distinct aspects of utilization of microorganisms in biotechnology. Its purpose is to present a review of the current knowledge of each of the subjects. Each of the chapters contains information that is of immediate utility to academic and private sector scientists. The book was written specifically for researchers, although the reviews would be useful to advanced students. The book contains separate review articles, and each is current, well written, and often provides examples of the commercial application of microbial processes. In "Production of Acetic Acid by Clostridium thermoaceticum, some recent industrial improvements are discussed. The authors of "Contact Lenses, Disinfectants, and Acanthamoeba Keratitis" focus on the biology of that protozoan and techniques for study of adherence to contact lenses and its prevention. The article "Marine Microorganisms as a Source of New Natural Products" considers biodiversity and the potential of marine biotechnology. The article "Sterioselective Biotransformations in Synthesis of Some Pharmaceutical Intermediates" provides examples of preparation of chiral drug intermediates and their importance in the efficacy of the final drug products. "Microbial Xylanolytic Enzyme System: Properties and Applications" is a review of xylanases -- their roles in microbial nutrition, pathogenesis, and biotechnology. In "Oleaginous Microorganisms: An Assessment of the Potential" the author reviews the microbial production of oils and emphasized products that are potentially superior to currently available lipids. The book will be auseful addition to the private libraries of researchers in biotechnology. Although the subject matter of each article is quite specific, the applicability of some of the techniques and approaches to industrial production will be of general interest to many readers.
