Purpose: The purpose is to present a broad overview and discussion on concepts that have relevance for nurses regardless of specialty or practice setting. Chapters offer practical information that can be used to advance nursing practice, the delivery of healthcare, and the overall nursing profession.
Audience: The book serves as a helpful resource for novice nurses or nursing students seeking an overview on a variety of trends and issues impacting nursing and healthcare. More experienced nurses can use this book to remain current on issues such as evidence-based practice, effective communication, critical thinking, and professional ethics and leadership. Dr. Kearney-Nunnery is an accomplished author who has edited all seven editions.
Features: This book successfully captures several professional issues in four sections and 387 pages. Section I, "Professional Bases for Practice," describes some of the theoretical underpinnings of nursing practice. It discusses topics such as evidence-based practice, health, illness, and holism, as well as issues germane to establishing and maintaining a professional identify. The chapter on the evolution of formal knowledge of nursology provides an overview of many nursing and other theoretical frameworks in a user-friendly manner and is an excellent refresher for those not currently in nursing school. Section II, "Critical Abilities in Professional Nursing Practice," discusses the skills needed for professional nursing practice. Topics such as communication, critical thinking, and nursing leadership are among the issues covered in a practical, useful manner. Section III, "Quality Care for Individuals, Families, and Groups," includes a discussion on ensuring quality and safety and the economics of healthcare, along with up-to-date implications for today's nurses. The discussion on policy engagement is a nice addition as this chapter underscores the importance of policy engagement to advance health and professional nursing practice. Section IV, "Envisioning the Future," offers a glimpse of the future in nursing and healthcare along with a discussion of the competencies nurses must possess. The online resources, key points, and discussion questions that accompany each chapter are outstanding.
Assessment: This book is a useful, timely and evidence-based resource that can be used by nurses regardless of setting or professional role.
