About the Author

Paul J. Carniol, M.D, F.A.C.S, is a plastic surgeon at Cosmetic Laser and Plastic Surgery, Summit, New Jersey, Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey at newark, U.S.A., and President of the International Society of Cosmetic Laser Surgeons. His other publications include Clinical Procedures in Laser Skin Rejuvenation (Informa Healthcare 2007) and Illustrated Manual of Injectable Fillers (Informa Healthcare 2011).

Gary D. Monheit, M.D, is a dermatologist at Total Skin and Beauty Dermatology Center, and Clinical Associate Professor, Department of Dermatology and Ophthalmology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, U.S.A. He is past president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. Dr. Monheit has authored many articles and texts on Cosmetic Dermatologic Surgery including peels, fillers, toxins, and resurfacing.

Description: Beginning facial plastic surgeons should find this book helpful in learning how to evaluate multicultural patients seeking surgical aesthetic improvements. Many of the authors are private practitioners and share their tips on how to counsel and properly choose the appropriate patient for a particular treatment. The unique physical facial structures of different ethnicities are discussed from the cultural expectations and the differences and challenges plastic surgeons face when evaluating and surgically modifying these patients' appearances.
Purpose: The purpose is to help aesthetically-oriented physicians understand the importance and process of a careful psychosocial as well as a medical assessment in order to maximize the chances of an outcome of optimal patient satisfaction (whether or not a procedure is ultimately performed).
Audience: The audience includes any physicians desiring to perform aesthetic procedures intended to enhance the beauty or appearance of an individual.
Features: The basic principles one must consider when performing various procedures are explained. Unique cultural issues among different races are discussed. Two chapters near the end of the book address how to deal with difficult patients. Imaginary dialogues include suggestions for more appropriate responses as well as less desirable ones to patients' comments, with explanations as to why one is preferable over the other. Most books usually do not mention these concerns. Numerous color photographs show patients before and after undergoing procedures. Most of the procedures are described, providing an overall perspective of what is involved in performing them, but not in enough detail to use to perform the procedure confidently.
Assessment: How to approach aesthetic corrections desired by people from varied ethnic backgrounds is important to know. The different challenges in correcting Asian eyelids, the broader nasal structure in people of African descent, and the hyperpigmentation problems seen in Middle Eastern descent patients are discussed along with the underlying nuances practitioners need to consider. The book does a nice job of addressing these surgical aesthetic perspectives, and budding aesthetic surgeons should find it informative.
