Afternoons in Paris
Francis Bacon was having a ball in Berlin-until his uncle Lastings disappeared, leaving Francis alone, broke, and wanted by the burgeoning Nazi party for a political murder he didn't commit. Luckily, for a young painter still learning his craft, there's no better place to find refuge than the cafes of Paris. In the City of Lights, Francis can perfect his French, complete his education, and-if he's lucky-escape with his life. Strolling along the boulevard one lovely evening, he hears gunshots and sees a Russian emigre cut down by an assassin. Francis dashes into the night and flees to the countryside, but when Uncle Lastings reappears, Francis will find himself back in the thick of a deadly game of international espionage.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for Janice Law
“A writer who mixes venerated clue-chasing techniques with current political dynamite.” —Hartford Courant

“Law draws a sympathetic, even tender study of a self-centered but essentially decent soul in the kind of torment that isn’t the least poetic.” —Marilyn Stasio, The New York Times, on The Lost Diaries of Iris Weed

“Law powerfully evokes . . . uneasiness and rising tension, all in a narrative style sometimes verging on the poetic but always suspenseful.” —Kirkus Reviews on The Night Bus

MAY 2017 - AudioFile

In decadent 1920s Paris, the young artist Francis Bacon becomes entangled in love and intrigue. Narrator Paul Ansdell voices the painter with light boyish tones that help to emphasize his youth. This approach to characterization provides an intriguing juxtaposition to the plot, which throws Bacon fully into the adult world of international espionage. The narration is well paced, and Ansdell’s depictions of characters—males and females of diverse nationalities—sound authentic. As the plot thickens, Ansdell ensures that listeners enjoy every twist in this unusual mystery. K.J.P. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
