Overview

Against the Wind is the day by day story of an epic bird hunting adventure across four western states. It tells of the coming of age for four English setter puppies, 12 weeks old at the beginning of the hunting season, as they learn how to become bird dogs. The accounts of each day's hunting are beautifully illustrated with photos of the birds, the dogs in action, and the pristine wildlands of the West. It is not a "how to do it" manual like so many others, but the actual adventure tale itself, of over 100 days in the field by the author with his dogs, gun, camera, and birds. As an upland game bird hunting story, Against the Wind is simply the best there is.

About the Author

Roy Pool worked for 30 years in Maryland as an Environmental Science teacher and a co-owner of an environmental consulting firm. He led semiannual photographic safaris to East Africa and the Central American rainforests, and he planned dive trips throughout the Caribbean. He retired in 2000, bought a motorhome, and set out for Alaska with his wife and beloved bird dogs. For the next few years, Roy spent his summers in Alaska, fishing for giant Pacific salmon and monster rainbows. When bird seasons opened on August 10, Roy exchanged fly rods for side-by-side shotguns, hunting ptarmigan and grouse. When the snows drove him south, he hunted his way through the Yukon, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Montana, Idaho, the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Sonora, Mexico. He spent his springs on a Mexican beach. Roy now lives on a small ranch bordering two million acres of National Forest in Arizona. From August through February each year, you’ll find Roy and his pack of English setters traveling throughout the West in a motor home, parked wherever they can set out against the wind, in search of game birds.
