Description: This multiauthored Canadian look at heart disease in older persons is a volume in the series Developments in Cardiovascular Medicine.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a succinct review of what is different about treating common cardiac diseases in older individuals. With the burgeoning aging population and heart disease being the leading cause of death in older persons, these are clearly worthy objectives. The authors do provide a succinct review.
Audience: Its audience is primarily cardiologists who treat older persons, but every physician treating older persons with heart disease would be the ideal audience.
Features: The book covers the epidemiology of heart disease in older persons, delirium and depression accompanying cardiac disease, pharmacology, primary prevention of heart disease in old age, regimens for treating heart failure, and approaches to dizziness and syncope.
Assessment: I like the compactness of this book and the excellent annotation provided in the chapters, each of which could stand alone as a useful essay. The book is very humble in pointing out where our scientific knowledge ends. In other areas the book is noncommittal: is the fact that fewer older patients with heart failure take ACE inhibitors due to the fact that they are not prescribed (for which physician education might help), or that they have been tried and not tolerated, or that we do not know how to blend medications and titrate them slowly in older persons? This is the state of knowledge that this book reflects.
