En la Edad Media, la agricultura sufrió muchos cambios. Los nobles y el clero fueron considerados los miembros más importantes de la sociedad feudal. Sin embargo, nunca fueron mayoría: en la Edad Media, casi todas las personas eran campesinos. No todos los agricultores tenían la misma categoría y estatus social. Muchos de ellos eran hombres libres. Entre estos, algunos eran pequeños terratenientes que vivían en su propia tierra, mientras que otros, los colonos, alquilaron al señor feudal una pequeña parcela de tierra.
