Overview

Since the time AIDS and HIV infection were first discovered, no medical cures have been developed. It became clear early on that education would be the cornerstone in the fight against AIDS, and that assessment remains true in the 1990s. This book describes how to tailor HIV education and prevention efforts to specific communities, including how to identify those most at risk, what types of interventions are most appropriate to those communities, how to engage those most at risk, and the role of participatory evaluation in determining the effectiveness of community education efforts.

Description: This book is a compilation of 14 essays from different authors dealing with the education of high-risk population groups about AIDS prevention. It is written from a social science point of view.
Purpose: The purpose is to reach health educators, researchers, and policymakers in order to bring ideas that will advance AIDS prevention education in our public health programs. These are worthy objectives, since the AIDS epidemic continues to rise and the funding of prevention programs continues to decrease. The book's objectives are met, although they could have been improved by including at least one chapter with a medical perspective that would give more detailed prevention advice. For example, latex condoms with spermicide are better than regular ones, etc.
Audience: The audience targeted is that of health educators, policymakers, and researchers. My impression was that the book was meant for social workers in charge of community health intervention programs, with less emphasis for health educators. All 20 contributing authors are credible in their field. An additional medical authority would have been beneficial. Most issues were behavioral in nature.
Features: This book is easy to read because it is a compilation of essays from different authors. The subjects are varied and dynamic. The style is also varied and dynamic. Unfortunately, it did not have enough illustrations, graphs, or pictures to demonstrate its many issues and statistics.
Assessment: This book is very useful in that it contains the latest statistics on the AIDS epidemic from reliable sources. It also contains good advice for the program directors of community outreach programs on how to be more effective in AIDS prevention with an ever-decreasing budget. This book identifies high-risk populations that need more attention. It should be available in libraries for reference purposes, and it should be made available to social workers and community health program directors. It is targeted for a narrow audience. I enjoyed reading it, and it improved my understanding of AIDS education.
