All in One Piece

Clipped by a speeding car as she crosses her street in Boston's South End, Regina Cutter gratefully accepts the help of her new upstairs tenant, Steven Damelin, a single young financial analyst. Reggie is surprised to learn from him that her late Aunt Jo, who was also a psychic, was involved in a “deal” with Steven shortly before her death. But before Reggie can learn specifics, Steven is brutally murdered in the upstairs flat, and Reggie's own front door is smeared with blood marks that look like Chinese characters.

Reggie has used her psychic powers before to help the Boston PD, but the homicide detective assigned to Steven's case not only lacks faith in her abilities but also makes it clear that she's not above suspicion. On the defensive and relegated to the sidelines, Reggie resolves to find the murderer-who may already have picked her as the next victim.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly

Boston psychic Regina "Reggie" Cutter is a little more comfortable with her sometimes strong but always unpredictable paranormal powers in her second outing from English professor Tishy (after 2005's Now You See Her). Reggie escapes with minor injuries after a car tries to run her down outside her South End townhouse, which she inherited along with her psychic abilities from her Aunt Jo, but her troubles really begin with the brutal murder of her upstairs tenant, Steven Damelin. Threats multiply as Reggie tries to untangle threads that reach into the immigrant past of nearby Lawrence, Mass., and into the complex relationships of Steven and his putative family and friends. As in Now You See Her, Aunt Jo's police detective pal, Frank Devaney, and an enigmatic biker, R.K. Stark, lend a helping hand. Middle-aged Reggie dithers less this time out and is more determined than ever to take charge of her own fate when challenged. (Mar.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

Blood dripping from the ceiling presents both trauma and opportunity for the psychic downstairs. Transplanted to Boston by divorce, Reggie Cutter (Now You See Her, 2005) supplements her skimpy settlement by renting out the upstairs of a South End townhouse she inherited from Aunt Jo. When she marches upstairs to see what that nice young Steve Damelin is up to, she discovers his dead body nail-gunned to the floorboards. Whodunit? Being of the psychic persuasion, Reggie has visions of a drowning and a log. Later, when she handles an old green bottle Steve gave Aunt Jo, she smells bread, roses, cabbage and whiskey. Of course homicide cops Devaney and Maglia pooh-pooh her sensory input, but Reggie is undeterred. Her resolve leads her to some very iffy company, including Steve's coworkers, his gay pals, the wild child he mentored and the Vogler family, who embraced him like a son and brother. Mishaps just a twinge away from fatal befall Reggie, but not to worry. Though her ESP lets her down, she'll be rescued by Stark, the Harley-riding, Camel-smoking part-owner of Biscuit, the beagle Jo left them. Plotting is not Tishy's forte, but her extrasensory glimpse of the 1912 Lawrence, Mass. mill strike and her fluid prose are almost compensation enough.
