When Detective Inspector Joseph Rafferty visits his local pub for a quick drink, he's looking to forget his troubles, not add to them. His ex-fiancée Abra is still refusing to talk to him, and he's fast losing hope of a reconciliation.

But Rafferty is not destined to enjoy his drink in peace. Because a man is found dead – stabbed in the pub's car park – and a preoccupied Rafferty is to lead the investigation.

What at first appears to be an open and shut case quickly becomes a lot more complex. The witnesses all plead alcohol-induced amnesia, and Rafferty's habitually cautious sidekick, Sergeant Dafyd Llewellyn, isn't helping either—casting doubt on all of Rafferty's conclusions.

And as Rafferty wrestles with the case, he also has to wrestle with Abra's determination to avoid their problems. Soon, he is in despair on both counts…

British mystery author Geraldine Evans is a traditionally published author (Macmillan, St Martin's Press, Hale, Severn House) who turned indie in 2010.

Her mysteries include the soon-to-be 18-strong Rafferty & Llewellyn series of British Mysteries, whose protagonist, DI Joe Rafferty, comes from a family who think -- if he must be a copper -- he might at least have the decency to be a bent one.

Her second is the 2-strong Casey & Catt British Mysteries, with protagonist DCI 'Will' Casey, whose drugged-up 'the Sixties never died', hippie parents, also pose the occasional little difficulty.

She has also published The Egg Factory, a standalone mystery/thriller set in the infertility industry, Reluctant Queen, a biographical historical, about the little sister of Henry VIII, romance (under the pseudonym of Maria Meredith), and non-fiction (some under the pseudonym of Genniffer Dooley-Hart).

Geraldine is a Londoner, who moved to a Norfolk (UK) market town in 2000.

Her interests include photography, getting to grips with photo manipulation software, learning keyboards and painting portraits with a good likeness, but little else to recommend them.

DI Joe Rafferty is trying to figure out how to win back his former fiancée, Abra, after the couple argued over the budget for their planned wedding. So, investigating the murder of local businessman Keith Sutherland, found knifed to death in a local pub car park, is a welcome distraction. Sutherland, who was a serious drinker, a serial womanizer, and a callous businessman whose company was deeply in debt, had plenty of enemies. Quickly eliminating the female suspects because police wisdom has it that knifing is a man's crime requiring great strength, Rafferty and Llewellyn narrow the field of perps and even arrest one, only to find that so-called police wisdom has let them down. Solidly written, with strong characters and realistic depictions of police work, Evans' latest will appeal to procedural fans.

While suffering the privations of life on his own, DI Joseph Rafferty tries gamely to solve the murder of an unpopular businessman. Small wonder he's lonely. Ever since his fiancee Abra got wind of his efforts to cut costs in planning their wedding (Death Dues, 2008, etc.) she's frozen him out. And single life doesn't suit our Joe. It leaves him far too much time to worry whether his thrifty Ma is going to get pinched for buying some of the dicey electronics the nefarious Perkins brothers have been boosting from local merchants. And it prompts him to sit for hours in the bar of The Railway Arms, where he hears obnoxious Keith Sutherland crash son Ian's bachelor party. Proximity to the scene gives Rafferty no advantage when the elder Sutherland turns up dead in the car park. He interviews Ian, sister Susie and their mother Mary, none of whom seem much saddened by Keith's passing. Derek Fowler is anything but grieved, since his partner's death gives him control of their electronic wholesale firm. Not even Andy Strong, proprietor of the Railway Arms, will miss Keith; with his custom came unwanted advances to Andy's wife. And Keith's mistress, Carol Mumford, keenly aware of his propensity to pursue other women, seems more tolerant than loving. Despite patient, repetitive police work, no front-runner emerges, and Inspector Bradley comes down ever harder on Rafferty's aching head. Little humor and no surprises, though the sense of tedium seems authentic enough.

This delightful police procedural is full of intrigue—with clever twists in the plot and surprises from the large cast of characters. Jonathan Keeble's expert narration considerably adds to the pleasure. Partners Rafferty and Llewellyn couldn't be more opposite. Llewellyn is also the uncle of Rafferty's ex-fiancée. Keeble skillfully captures Llewellyn's Welsh accent, which becomes thicker when he's overwrought, and he achieves an endearing characterization of fiancée Abra as she and Rafferty reconcile. Best is Keeble’s portrayal of Rafferty's feelings of fallibility when he ponders what to do next in the murder investigation. As comic relief, Keeble’s depiction of Rafferty's mother, who's not averse to buying hot properties, is hilarious, especially in the moments when she confronts her son, the “copper.” S.G.B.
