About the Author

Matt Barnes scrapped and clawed his way through fourteen NBA seasons, which included a championship in 2017 with the Golden State Warriors. He is a father of six (soon to be seven), the cohost of the series All the Smoke, the CEO of All the Smoke Productions, and an investor/advisor for several companies.

Stephen Jackson played fourteen NBA seasons and was known for his infectious confidence and charisma. His career included a championship in 2003 with the San Antonio Spurs. He is the cohost of the series All the Smoke and has emerged as a spokesman for human rights and equality for people all around the world.

Not every sports program deserves a coffee-table book, but in this instance, NBA legends turned hosts Jackson and Barnes prove they are the exception rather than the norm. Based on interviews conducted on their podcast of the same name,All the Smoke invites readers to partake in some sips and bites from the athletes, entertainers, musicians, and sports media moguls who have appeared on the show. Here, the hosts get into the hearts and minds of their guests while discussing topics that run the gamut. They also use eye-catching candid photos and brief biographies of their guests to put readers in the room, helping newcomers or those not in the know to catch up on the who’s who. They're unabashed about cannabis use: "It was burnt lips at first sight,” says Barnes, explaining the sign of a smoker that made him know he and Jackson would get along. Once a substance that could get players banned, weed is now less controversial in society and—at least according to guest and former teammate Baron Davis—“the NBA has adopted it.” Each dispatch is heartfelt, educational, hilarious, and sometimes touching, as when interviewees recount real-world and real-life examples that inspired and sustained them. The book is peppered with the duo's adventures and shenanigans, as well as the respect for each other that inspires their daily work. An entire chapter dedicated to the late Kobe Bryant—“he meant everything to me,” declares Isaiah Thomas—precedes one devoted to Michael Jordan. Also part of the discussion are chapters centered on parenthood, mental health, and hip-hop. A final chapter, “Flowers,” turns the proverbial microphone around and allows their guests to clap for Barnes and Jackson.
