Kirby Heyborne is a wonderful narrator who is well suited to this first-person story of pioneer Daniel Boone’s life. Brought up as a Quaker, he was twice captured by Indians and then participated in the Revolutionary War. Narrative on Boone’s thoughts and actions as well as clever, well-written period dialogue, delivered in Heyborne's assured and gentle voice, provides richly dramatized scenes. Heyborne's portrayals avoid trying to perform characterizations of secondary characters. Nonetheless, his smooth, rich voice and excellent pacing capture the energy of this well-written novel. The engrossing production hooks listeners on Heyborne’s performance as well as the story. S.C.A. © AudioFile 2017, Portland, Maine
