CHAPTER 1

PART 1

This story took place at a time when everyone wore a hat. In those days, you would never see a gentleman dressed formally and holding a cane in his hand without a top hat perched on his head, nor would you see an elegant lady dressed according to the latest fashions without a chic feathered hat. The boys who rode up and down the street on their toy wooden horses wore casquettes to shield their eyes from the sun. This made them feel like they were on a real adventure, galloping through unknown lands. Even the army soldier had a shako, which was a very special hat adorned with a shiny badge that he wore with great pride.

One Sunday afternoon in the spring, a little girl named Allegra was walking down the street with her mother and father. Allegra was dressed in a very beautiful purple dress with light yellow trim. She was skipping happily ahead of her parents while whistling a song. Allegra was holding her hat in her hand and was waving it back and forth with every step she took. It was a very pretty straw hat with a pink ribbon that tied under her chin.

All of a sudden a strong gust of wind blew! It snatched Allegra's hat, lifted it up in the air and carried it far, far away. This happened so suddenly, so fast! Allegra reached to grab her hat, but couldn't catch it. She just watched it become smaller and smaller as it disappeared in the distance.

The hat went swinging through the air, making circles and loops. The two ends of its ribbon flapped like the wings of a gracious dove as it flew above the streets of the town, catching the eye of every passerby. Every man, woman and child was looking up, marveling at the flying hat and at the same time holding on to their own hats so that they too wouldn't fly away.

The hat kept on gliding through the air as it went flying over hills and fields until it began to slow down. It twirled in the air one last time before resting in the grass by some shady trees.

Mama Rabbit, who was nibbling on a leaf nearby, observed the hat as it landed.

"What is it?" she wondered. "Is it a big flower? Is it a big leaf that fell from a tree? What could it be?"

Mama Rabbit was very curious, so she came cautiously toward the hat while sniffing very fast, hoping to detect the answer. She hopped around the hat once and then twice. The hat did not move. She gently nudged it with her nose. The hat still did not move. Mama Rabbit now felt brave, so she poked the brim of the hat even harder. With that, the hat tipped, flipped and fell right on top of her!

She felt scared and hurriedly tried to hop away. But each time she jumped, the hat jumped along with her!

After hopping around for a little while, Mama Rabbit realized she was not in any danger. In fact, she thought that the hat would make a perfect home. You see, Mama Rabbit was about to have babies and she was very happy to discover a safe and cozy home.
