Along the Way
Along the Way is a tale of the spiritual journey of Theo Douglas under the guidance of his mentors Barti and Tabitha. Physical journeys, two to Israel and one across the United States, serve as the setting for the stories and as an allegory for the spiritual journey that is occurring at the same time.
Along the Way is the name of a column on everyday spirituality that the author wrote for the North Star, the weekly diocesan newspaper of the Diocese of Chalan Kanoa (Northern Mariana Islands) for over 20 years. Stories soon became an important feature of Along the Way. There was a series of stories for Along the Way that began with a pilgrimage and used the idea of sacred journey as its theme. The series proved quite popular. Eventually, the story evolved into a trilogy which followed the sacred journey of the story’s protagonist, Theo Douglas. That trilogy is the heart of this eBook.
While the story is fiction, it is fiction with a purpose. It is a vehicle for reflection on living as a Christian and seeking one’s ultimate meaning and purpose. The wisdom shared in the stories are certainly not fiction but is drawn from many of the great spiritual writers of the Church both classic and contemporary; including St. Augustine, St. Theresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Ignatius Loyola, St. Francis deSales, Karl Rahner, Adrian Van Kaam, Dr. Susan Muto, Fr. Bernard Lonergan SJ, Sören Kierkegaard, Dietrich Bonheoffer and Thomas Merton.
Each of the stories can stand alone. What connects the three stories is the emerging relationship between Theo and his mentors, as well as the underlying spiritual journey.
