Editorial Reviews

Through the Looking Glass Children's Book Review

From very early on it was obvious that Amelia Earhart was not your average girl. Instead of playing quiet games like the other girls, Amelia built a roller coaster in her backyard and scared her family half to death. Indeed no one should really have been surprised when grown up Amelia announced that she wanted to take flying lessons. Amelia not only worked to pay for her lessons but she also learned how to repair and take care of airplanes, much to the amazement of the mechanics who had never seen a woman do such work. It wasn’t long before Amelia began to get a name for herself as famous pilot and when she was asked to be the first woman to cross the Atlantic in an airplane she gladly accepted. The trip was dangerous and Amelia was a great help as a navigator and assistant but she couldn’t help wishing that was one who sitting behind the controls. Just four years later Amelia got her wish when she began her solo flight across the Atlantic. It took her fourteen hours and fifty four minutes and she broke yet another world record while she was at it. Being the first woman to cross the Atlantic wasn’t enough for Amelia though. She wanted to do more. This time she wanted to go around the world and this time it was a journey that she did not complete. Without a doubt Amelia Earhart is one of the great women in history and her exploits have fascinated girls and young women for decades. Young readers who are interested in finding out about Amelia and her life will be delighted with this graphic novel style biography. This is one of the many titles in the excellent “Graphic Library” series.

Children's Literature Comprehensive Database

Amelia Earhart was never afraid to try new things. She built her own roller coaster in the backyard when she was only seven years old. During the winter she loved to speed down the hills on her sled—lying on her belly like the boys. When she saw her first air show in 1920, she was hooked and soon began taking flying lessons. During her aviation career she set many world records and became a well-known and well-respected aviator. She disappeared while attempting a flight around the world in 1937. Part of Capstone Press’ “Graphic Library” series, Amelia Earhart’s story is told here in graphic novel format. With a carefully controlled vocabulary, simple sentence structure, and straight forward presentation of information, it is ideally suited for the reluctant or below grade level reader. A table of contents, glossary, bibliography, an index, and additional information sections providing key facts about Amelia Earhart’s fascinating life, round out the presentation.
