Overview

John Castagno's Artists' Signatures and Monograms have become the standard reference source for galleries, museums, libraries, and collectors around the world. In the first volume of American Artists: Signatures and Monograms, 1800-1989 (Scarecrow, 1990), Castagno provided identification for more than 5,000 artists' signatures, along with biographical information and reference sources. This second volume contains some 3,500 artists and 4,600 signature examples. In addition to the standard signature entries, the book features sections for monograms and initials, common surname signatures, alternative surname signatures, symbols, Cyrillic Signatures, and illegible signatures. Less than five percent of the entries in this volume are listed in the original volume—and these are included to provide additional information about the artists.

About the Author

John Castagno is a multimedia artist and sculptor. He has been an art researcher for the past forty years and also lectures on art and on art as an investment. With this companion to the publisher's American Artists: Signatures and Monograms, 1800-1989(1990), art researcher and multimedia artist Castagno adds to his output of unique reference sources for identifying artists' signatures. Here, he presents American artists' signatures graphically in alphabetical order, including birth and death dates when known. He also provides an initial system keyed to a list of the sources and abbreviations used in each entry. Most of the entries are straightforward examples of signatures-with variations when applicable-followed by five shorter sections dealing with alternative signatures, symbols, and other variations. In total, 3500 artists and 4600 signatures are represented.
