Amleto (The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark, "La tragedia di Amleto, principe di Danimarca") è una delle tragedie shakespeariane più conosciute e citate. Fu scritta probabilmente tra il 1600 e l'estate del 1602.

È tra le opere più frequentemente rappresentate in quasi ogni paese occidentale ed è considerata un testo cruciale per attori maturi. Il monologo di Amleto "Essere o non essere" (atto III, scena I), il passaggio più famoso del dramma, vanta un'immensa gamma di interpretazioni sui palcoscenici di tutto il mondo, anche se spesso questo soliloquio viene erroneamente citato accanto all'immagine di Amleto che tiene in mano un teschio: in realtà la scena del teschio è nella parte finale del dramma (atto V, scena I) e non ha niente a che vedere con "Essere o non essere", che si trova nella parte centrale (atto III, scena I).

Amleto è una delle opere drammaturgiche più famose al mondo, tradotta in quasi tutte le lingue esistenti. È considerato dalla maggior parte dei critici il capolavoro assoluto di Shakespeare, nonché una delle più grandi opere della letteratura di tutti i tempi.

Widely esteemed as the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare (1564-1616) was an actor and theatrical producer in addition to writing plays and sonnets. Dubbed "The Bard of Avon," Shakespeare oversaw the building of the Globe Theatre in London, where a number of his plays were staged, the best-known of which include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, and Macbeth. The First Folio, a printed book of 36 of his comedies, tragedies, and history plays, was published in 1623.
