Description: This book provides an introduction into three- and four-dimensional ob/gyn sonography. It begins with a good review of the technical aspects of three- and four-dimensional scanning and image reconstruction. Additionally, it contains some very nice images showing the different applications in both Obstetrical and Gynecological Sonography.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to orient ob/gyn practitioners to the technology of three- and four-dimensional ultrasound. This is a very timely reference that can be utilized in a continually expanding field. It will allow its target audience to more thoroughly understand and keep up to date with these new techniques.
Audience: The editors of this book define their target audience as ob/gyn practitioners. I think this reference will be useful to practitioners as well as students and residents. It provides a basic overview for those unfamiliar with the technology and a solid reference to expand the knowledge of those already utilizing three- and four-dimensional ultrasound. Several of the authors included in this reference have published manuscripts related to this subject matter.
Features: The book begins with a introductory chapter on the technique involved in three- and four-dimensional sonography. This is a very good chapter, particularly for those not familiar with the technology. The remaining chapters are devoted to specific obstetrical and gynecological applications of 3-D and 4-D ultrasound. These include early pregnancy, fetal malformations, multiple gestations and fetal echocardiography. Other chapters discuss the application in evaluating adnexal masses and neonatal brains. The book is filled with beautiful images that are very useful to the reader. The text is informative and thorough. The authors are obviously strong proponents of these technologies, therefore the adjectives used to describe 3-D and 4-D sonography may be overstated at times.
Assessment: This book is a useful reference for practitioners just starting to use 3-D and 4-D technology, as well as those more familiar with the techniques. This atlas contains many high quality images, many with pathological correlation, and several useful charts and diagrams.
