About the Author

Sandra Dunbar-Smalley, DPA, OTR/L, FAOTA, completed her undergraduate degree at Loma Linda University in Loma Linda, California; her Master of Arts in Occupational Therapy from New York University in New York City; and her Doctor of Public Administration degree from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The last degree exposed her to organizational behavior, leadership, management, and strategic planning content, all of which have influenced her work in occupational therapy.

Sandra is currently the provost at AdventHealth University. She was previously the assistant dean of professional development and education in the College of Health Care Sciences at Nova Southeastern University. Her responsibilities included the coordination of the Center for Academic and Professional Excellence, which incorporates a Leadership and Management Academy for faculty who desire to develop and improve their leadership skills. Sandra’s belief that everyday leadership provides numerous opportunities to encourage personal and professional growth has been reinforced by the process of compiling another edition of An Occupational Perspective on Leadership: Theoretical and Practical Dimensions.

Kristin Winston, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, completed her bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, New Hampshire. She went on to complete a Master of Education degree at the University of Vermont in Burlington, Vermont, with a specialization in early childhood special education. Kristin’s PhD in occupational therapy was earned at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. It was while studying at Nova Southeastern University that Kristin first had an opportunity to explore the topic of leadership under the guidance of Sandra Dunbar-Smalley, who continues as a leadership mentor. Kristin currently serves as program director and associate professor in the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program at the University of New England where she continues to study and teach leadership concepts. She has held several formal leadership positions in clinical, academic, and community organizations and has also participated in informal leadership opportunities in those settings. Kristin is a graduate of the College of Health Care Sciences Leadership and Management Academy at Nova Southeastern University and the American Occupational Therapy Association Academic Leadership Institute.

Description: This book details varying viewpoints of leadership in occupational therapy and features several key occupational therapy leaders as active examples of leadership principles and beliefs.
Purpose: It provides a common bridge of understanding between leadership and occupational therapy theories. The book uses a metaphor of building a new structure and the birth of occupational therapy and supports the underlying rationale of how occupational therapy as a discipline could not have been possible without leadership. The book meets its objectives through the application of commonly known beliefs and theoretical principles within the discipline. It also challenges readers to enact change and develop their own leadership journey.
Audience: The audience is practitioners who are interested in becoming leaders and/or managers. While the book does not specifically targeting a particular level of clinical experience, it provides an easy-to-understand framework for understanding leadership principles while using known theoretical occupational therapy principles.
Features: This book covers leadership theory and principles using language familiar to occupational therapy practitioners. Chapters are organized according to either person factors (internal) or contextual factors (external) with common integration of occupational therapy theoretical principles and approaches. The active use of commonly agreed upon occupational therapy theoretical references strengthens the book's appeal to occupational therapists. For example, chapter three combines the Transactional Leadership Model with the Model of Human Occupation to foster the application of leadership existence within the field's known theoretical models. Each chapter follows the same framework and design, includes differentiated learning activities of varying intensity, and case examples. Despite these positive attributes, I found the level of objectives disappointing. Based on Bloom's Taxonomy, many of the objectives consist of knowledge level skill development, but given the various activities, the application or analysis skill levels would have been more appropriate.
Assessment: Overall, this book provides a solid starting point for occupational therapy practitioners seeking leadership information. The only comparison is Leading and Managing Occupational Therapy Services: An Evidence-Based Approach, Braveman (F. A. Davis, 2006). That book has a more clinical perspective on leadership. For example, it emphasizes the management perspective as it relates to leadership (bottom up), while this book presents theoretical leadership as it influences others (top down).
