Description: In this handbook on anesthesia care for emergency situations, short chapters include key points, background, preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative considerations.
Purpose: This small and easy-to-carry handbook provides trainees in anesthesiology and emergency medicine, as well as others interested in brushing up their knowledge, a source of vital and relevant information. If there could by only one book to carry around or have readily available in the OR setup for emergency cases, this would be it. The chapters are succinct and provide a good basis for planning to deliver anesthesia care for many emergencies
Audience: This is a wonderful book that could be placed in every anesthesia on-call room for quick reading on the way to prepare for emergencies, as well as in the operating rooms designated for emergency cases. Our emergency medicine colleagues ought to have ready access to this handbook as they prepare patients under their care for the operating room. The editors have assembled a team of authors that includes faculty and trainees in anesthesia, yet there is a very strong consistency across the chapters.
Features: The handbook readily divides into four sections. The first deals with general principles of emergency care, including fluids, electrolytes, access, transfusion, and acute pain. The next section, actually a single chapter, covers the trauma patient. The bulk of the book covers emergencies in each of the major surgical specialties, and is excellent without exception. Finally, a chapter covers anesthesia emergencies, including failed intubation, aspiration, anaphylaxis, and malignant hyperthermia, to name a few. Although there are very few illustrations, the charts and flow diagrams are of excellent quality and very helpful.
Assessment: There are outstanding textbooks that cover trauma anesthesia, the difficult airway, and other subjects. This easy-to-carry handbook, however, fills the need for a book that can be perused between getting notified about the need for emergent anesthesia care and meeting the patient in or near the operating room. It provides adequate information to prepare the anesthesia equipment and drugs as well as to care for the patient under emergency circumstances. It is a great addition to our library!
