Description: The authors set out to write a book for medical students and junior (nonanesthesia) house staff on their anesthesia rotations that is meant to serve as a quick reference ("whirlwind" in the authors' words) to bridge the gap between the basic and clinical sciences.
Purpose: This pocket book, and the important online access, is intended to help readers with key points on important anesthesia topics. It is meant to be a guide for emergency situations as well as to help early trainees in answering questions from faculty (what used to be called pimping in the U.S. and what the authors call "grilling").
Audience: Written by junior residents, this book unquestionably is intended for medical and other students on their first exposure to anesthesia. It covers many topics, but only with the slightest of detail. As a quick reference, the "app" is extremely easy to navigate and, to this writer, more useful than the book. The resident authors have done a reasonable job.
Features: Providing the basics of many anesthesia subjects, the book covers preoperative evaluation and preparation, anesthesia practice (e.g. airway, oxygen use, regional, and pharmacology) and common and important clinical situations. The book concludes with approximately 20 pages of short questions with detailed answers that are succinct and clear. The "app" is so easy to use — though burdensome to download and requiring site registration — that the book is superfluous. The index is rather amazing and quickly brings users to the needed information.
Assessment: This is a wonderful, easy-to-read book for medical students and for faculty involved in their education.
