About the Author

Dr. M M Begani has been working at Bombay Hospital Institute of Medical Sciences, Mumbai for the past 40 years. He completed his Master’s in Surgery from Sardar Patel Medical College, Rajasthan (earlier known as Bikaner Medical College) and subsequently worked as a post-doctoral fellow at St. Mark’s Hospital, UK. He has published many research papers on general surgery in reputed international journals, participated in many international scientific conferences and has been a guest editor for the Bombay Hospital Journal twice with special issues on day care surgery. He has received several international and national awards and his work experience surpasses thousands of surgeries. He is a member of many national and international scientific societies.

 

Dr. Dheeraj Mulchandani is currently a consultant general and laparoscopic surgeon at Abhishek Day Care Centre, Mumbai. Prior to this, he worked at P. D. Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre and at Saifee Hospital, both in Mumbai. He completed his Master’s in Surgery at the University of Pune. He has published numerous research papers on general and bariatric surgery in reputed national and international journals. He is a member of several national and international medical societies. 

Dr Shagufta Choudhary is a Consultant Anaesthetist at Abhishek Day Care Institute and St Elizabeth Hospital, Mumbai. She completed her M.D. in Anaesthesiology from Bombay Hospital in 2008. She is a practicing Anaesthesiologist since the past 10 years. Since the last 5 years, she has dedicated herself to the field of ambulatory anaesthesia and strives for minimum hospitalization time of patients coming for day care surgery. She has published various articles on ambulatory anaesthesia in National and International journals. She attended the 12thCongress on International Ambulatory Surgical Society held in Beijing in May 2017 as a part of the Indian contingent. She believes in the bright future and greater acceptance of ambulatory surgery worldwide.

Description: This 132-page book from Indian authors covers the goals of ambulatory surgery, anesthetic techniques, selecting and optimizing patients for outpatient surgery, outpatient surgical considerations unique to the pediatric and geriatric populations, and anesthesia for a variety of surgical subspecialties. Chapters also cover common nerve blocks, pain management, and more.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an overview of ambulatory surgery, focusing on the basic principles and the types of surgeries that may be performed on an outpatient basis.
Audience: The intended audience is unclear. The information is too superficial for trainees, as they need greater explanation. It is also too basic for practicing anesthesiologists. It may be helpful for individuals who will be rotating in an ambulatory center and require a quick review prior to the start of the day.
Features: The book begins with the principles of ambulatory surgery. The explanations of fast tracking and patient selection are superb. It then focuses on the individual surgical specialties and the types of procedures that are amenable to ambulatory surgery. The chapters are concise and focus on the major points, but this conciseness limits the usefulness of the book. At times, there is a focus on areas of anesthesia that have proven to be incorrect, such as the avoidance of sevoflurane in patients with renal disease because of compound A toxicity. This statement is simply incorrect. There also is a chapter on medicolegal issues, which is important and rarely addressed, but legal issues are dependent upon the state or country in which one practices.
Assessment: This book accomplishes its goal of covering all of ambulatory surgery, but with achieving this goal, it has limited the information to the minimum. As such, the audience for the book is unclear because it is too superficial for students and for practicing anesthesia providers. A more useful book is Ambulatory Anesthesiology, An Issue of Anesthesiology Clinics, Volume 37, Issue 2, Walsh (Elsevier, 2019), which although it does not cover as many surgical procedures, it provides greater information on the principles of anesthesia for ambulatory surgery.
