Description: This preparatory aid for the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) oral board examination provides high-yield facts on relevant clinical issues in general anesthesia and its subspecialties using a case-based approach.
Purpose: This study aid evolved from the editor's personal notes and her preparation for the oral examination. Given the limited number of quality oral board review books available, this one is a useful addition to the ABA candidate's armamentarium.
Audience: The associate editor suggests that, in addition to oral board candidates, this book may be useful for medical students and anesthesia residents to enhance their overall medical knowledge and performance on the wards. While this book provides a great deal of general information on a broad range of topics in anesthesia, its use of clinical cases and outlined treatment plans make it more suitable for oral board preparation. Moreover, the introductory chapter focuses on expectations and mental preparation for the oral exam.
Features: This book is divided into 15 sections covering various topics and subspecialties in anesthesia, and these are subsequently divided into chapters. Each chapter starts with a case, followed by clinically relevant issues in an outline format. At the end of the chapter, a section called the "Knock Out Treatment Plan," details recommended preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative management for the case. Important facts and pointers are highlighted under "TKO" headings. Each chapter is approximately two to three pages long and is well suited for rapid review and assimilation.
Assessment: Overall, this review compares favorably with other oral board study aids. Chapters are well organized and provide succinct information in a digestible format that can be quickly read. As the editor notes, this book is not exhaustive and its contents should be supplemented with information from a standard textbook. Another limitation of this book is that the "KO Treatment Plan" provides an idealized plan for management of the case. While instructive, this may not adequately prepare test candidates for possible iterations and alternative questions they may encounter on the exam. That being said, one of the attributes assessed on the exam is adaptability, and perhaps this is a quality that cannot be taught or captured in a book.
