Description: The book presents 200 topics from the content outline provided by the American Board of Anesthesiology (ABA) for the BASIC exam. Each chapter contains a concise, self-contained review of an individual topic, with most chapters ranging from one to four pages. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose: The aim of the book is to provide a core resource for review which can be supplemented with practice questions and deeper dives into the major anesthesiology textbooks. This objective is clearly worthy; the BASIC exam is one that must be passed to complete residency, and according to one recent published survey, almost half of all residents use review books in their preparation. By following the ABA-provided content outline nearly identically, this book meets its objective of being that core resource.
Audience: The target audience is clinical anesthesia residents preparing for the board exam. The book meets the needs of this audience and is also a valuable resource for interested medical students on an anesthesiology rotation to pick one or two topics daily to discuss with a resident or attending.
Features: The book presents the content outline of the American Board of Anesthesiology for the BASIC exam in a topic-by-topic manner, and as such, provides a wide breadth of material. At times, this approach may appear to come at the cost of sufficient depth for some readers.
